COURSE DESCRIPTION

  1. Course Title: TS-700: Studies in DeradicalizationCourse Description: TS-700 provides an in-depth exploration of the concept and practices of deradicalization, focusing on understanding the social, psychological, and political dynamics that contribute to radicalization and the processes involved in countering extremist ideologies. This course will engage with key theories of radicalization, examine real-world case studies of deradicalization programs from around the globe, and analyze the challenges and ethical concerns associated with de-radicalization efforts. Students will critically assess various policy approaches and intervention strategies, with a focus on their effectiveness, implementation, and long-term impact on individuals and society.Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, students will be able to:
    1. Understand Key Theories and Frameworks of Radicalization: Identify and explain the major theories and models of radicalization and how they contribute to the development of extremist ideologies.
    2. Critically Assess Deradicalization Strategies: Analyze various national and international deradicalization programs, evaluating their effectiveness and the challenges they face in real-world contexts.
    3. Evaluate Psychological and Sociological Factors: Examine the psychological and sociological factors that drive individuals toward radicalization, including identity, group dynamics, social isolation, and grievances.
    4. Examine Ethical Considerations in Deradicalization: Understand the ethical implications of deradicalization programs, especially with regard to human rights, autonomy, and the balance between security and rehabilitation.
    5. Analyze Policy Approaches: Evaluate the role of government policies, law enforcement, community-based interventions, and educational strategies in the prevention and treatment of radicalization.
    6. Apply Knowledge to Case Studies: Develop a deep understanding of deradicalization efforts through the study of real-world case studies, including both successes and failures in different global contexts.
    7. Design Deradicalization Interventions: Using theoretical and practical knowledge, design a comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and ethically sound deradicalization intervention plan that can be tailored to specific contexts.
    8. Engage in Critical Discussions on Future Directions: Reflect on emerging trends in radicalization and deradicalization and discuss potential future challenges and solutions in this rapidly evolving field.

    Prerequisites: None, but a background in social sciences, political science, or psychology is recommended.
